Essential Mess / by Alexander Lyadov

What does an artist’s palette look like?
Dirt. Chaos. A jumble of colors.
It's foolish to look for meaning there, right?

No.
Even disorder has meaning.
It takes effort to see it.

The repulsive look of the palette points to beauty.
Without that mess, no art gets made.
The best roses need manure.

Well, that sounds abstract. And in reality?
We highly value paintings and roses.
But from the manure and the palette we wrinkle our noses and avert our gaze.

It is the same in business, our professions, relationships, or sports.
We deprive ourselves of a source of growth.
The reason is a false belief:

Under no circumstances look into the dark corner of your life.

The good news: the exact opposite is true.

Sincerely yours,

-Alexander
