Move Anyhow / by Alexander Lyadov

Sometimes you just can’t get yourself to do or start something important. You seem to know how and why, but knowledge refuses to turn into action.

You need an impulse. A push. Like an ignition spark for an engine.

The beauty is that this quantum of energy can be taken from anywhere.

You need to start moving physically, doing something with your body. While moving from point A to point B, it is much easier to make a difficult call, schedule a long-postponed visit, or put your thoughts into words.

A writer I know told me that he simply can’t sit down at a desk and write like everyone else. But going for a walk with a voice recorder works like a charm!

It is no coincidence that the world’s best research centers, universities, and academies surround their buildings with wooded parks full of paths where you want to wander alone or with a colleague.

Breakthrough ideas have often visited the minds of active geniuses: in a bath (Archimedes), on public transportation (Henri Poincaré), on a Sandwalk in the garden (Charles Darwin), or in the mountains (George de Mestral).

The takeaway: if the desired action is somehow stuck, engage your body through whatever activity you enjoy most.

Sincerely yours,
