Meet Your Volcano / by Alexander Lyadov

Here’s a close translation, preserving your sentence structure and tone.

I saw an Instagram video of different mountain bikers crashing. Some of the falls were terrifying. The most common comment was:

“It’s totally optional.”

Well, I’m not so sure. I think back to my skydives, motorcycle cornering, psychedelic rituals, and other “extreme” experiences. During those periods, I felt a pull that was hard to resist. Impossible.

Something inside insistently demands to come out, and all you can choose is how to let It manifest here and now.

Now that I’ve studied archetypal forces a little, things have become easier. It’s clear that you can’t ignore their interests. They will manifest anyway, but then it may happen compulsively and often destructively.

It’s like volcanic activity. For a tourist, it’s a sudden catastrophe. For a local, it’s routine, almost part of the plan. You can even monitor it and, while everything is quiet, soak in the hot water.

A volcano is dangerous to someone who fears it and doesn’t want to know anything about it. A few tragic eruptions are enough, and soon a person feels superstitious terror, panics, and tries to appease the powerful “evil spirit.”

The alternative is to observe the behavior of archetypes with curiosity. In what situations are they peaceful, and in what situations do they go wild? In short, study their structure, activity, and history like a volcanologist.

What helps me is the theory of Jungian psychoanalysis and a “journal of observations” in which for years I record and analyze dreams.

What has changed? My attitude toward the forces asking to come out. I’m slowly learning not to fear them, but to value them, befriend them, and even love them.

The outer and inner worlds are connected. One changes after the other.

Sincerely yours,

-Alexander
