“So, for the last couple of months I've been making several approaches to write a recommendation to Alexander Lyadov.
Not at his request, but because I saw that he publishes such reviews. A few approaches ended up with nothing, because my experience of communicating and working with him does not fit into the format of references that are written to him.
So I will just write a little story.
I met him in 2007 or 2008, I do not remember which cafe, but I remember that we were sitting at a table under the winding staircase. And over a cup of coffee the young man, who had spent several years in Moscow, was saying something about bright ideas in venture capital stories, his advertising background and experience in Renaissance. I had already had a lot of shit in the venture capital business and realized that it was sweat and blood and a lot of hard work. The only thing I latched on to in the conversation was the value scale and the thought I took away from that meeting, "This is something that might help him, but more likely to trample the boy."
When he created Dekarta Capital, I didn't believe anything would come of it. But just balancing high tech and factories/steamships/movement in a time of crisis is what gave it a shot in the arm. While Descartes existed I actively recommended it. Strange as it may seem, but Dekarta was the first and last Ukrainian fund that paid me reference phi, even though it had never been stipulated before. On the contrary, most of Ukrainian funds had promised to pay such pies, but no one had ever paid a penny. Then I thought that if I had been thanked like this from every deal, I would have been a very wealthy man in 2010.
Over the years I had businessmen coming to me and asking for help to argue against Sasha on the boards, and in 100% of cases after a detailed analysis of the situation, I, a man who 100% of the time takes the side of the entrepreneur in disputes with investors, had no choice but to agree with the position of Sasha. Even in the moments when he was acting tough in business, there were no questions for him. All the people I sent to Sasha for money left with very good feedback, if not money, and sometimes with a reassembled project.
Despite my dislike of various consultants, it was Sasha's approach years ago that gave me the feeling that real value consulting should look like this. And when he started his practice, I already started referring people to him and I got great feedback 100% of the time. Once, when I had to lead a stratsession in one of the portfolio companies with a complicated sounding board, and I was not physically able, and doubted my ability to pull it off, I did not hesitate to give it to Sasha and did not lose a chance.
His articles, though light, are deep and it makes you read.
The funny thing is that in some European circles he is also liked and appreciated, but as a wrestler, because wrestling and weights have become an integral part of his life, and his professional risk assessment skills made him quit motorcycling.
In short, if you need a business therapist, board member, strategy adviser or facilitator, here he is!".
